Pilgrims have walked through Europe to the Holy Land, to St Jacques of Compostelle, to Rome for many centuries… essentially for spiritual reasons but also for economic reasons and, more recently, to enjoy the pleasure of hiking, sceneries, silence and solitude…
Nowadays, more and more Europeans, believers or not, take these ways mapped out by the first pilgrims.
All over, associations have been created to put these ways back to life, namely Compostelle but also Canterbury to Rome (via francignena) for example.
These associations testify a renewd interest for the discovery of the cultural and artistic heritage and for another way of personal and spiritual development.
